The Living Lab for Health at IrsiCaixa facilitates changes in the governance of multistakeholder ecosystems to find better solutions to our persistent and complex challenges. We are experts in engaging a large amount of different stakeholders such as the education community, scientists, policy makers, industry or civil society organizations. With this aim, the Lab facilitates collective reflections and participatory cocreation processes, with a special attention to mutual learning using systemic toolkits to better address complexity and to accomplish the “Responsible Research and Innovation” (RRI) dimensions. Incorporating these values, the Lab also develops educational resources with innovative methodologies such as inquiry-based learning, system thinking, transdisciplinarity or community based participatory research. The tasks that the Living Lab is implementing with CONNECT are being implemented within the network of schools Escoles Sentinella.

Dr. Georgios Kolionis is a Research Project Manager at EXUS. He holds a B.Sc. in Mathematics and received his Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics with honours from the University of the Aegean. He is a certified Project Manager Professional PMP® and a member of the Project Management Institute. Before joining EXUS he was employed as an Assistant Professor at the American University of the Middle East and his research has been published in top peer-reviewed journals. His research interests lie in the field of Applied Mathematics studying the behaviour of dynamical systems near singularities. He has extended experience in teaching over the last 15 years, having taught in all levels of education, in both private and public sector. He joined EXUS in August 2021

Mr. Marcos Ernesto Varveris is a Research Consultant at EXUS. Marcos obtained a BSc in Business Management and MSc in Entrepreneurship from the University of Surrey. He has managed several European research projects and worked in the Business Development department of EXUS, with tasks pertaining to market research and European business growth. His research interests lie in the application of AI and Big Data analytics for social good.

Dr. Eva Jaho is Senior Research & Innovation Consultant at EXUS. She holds a PhD, MSc and BSc degrees in Networking from the Department of Informatics and Telecommunications of the University of Athens. She has extensive experience managing and coordinating multidisciplinary European research projects and has authored numerous publications for international journal and conferences. Her main research interests are in Big Data analytics and AI technologies.

Scientific Coordinator and Principal Investigator
Dr. Alexandra Okada is an educational researcher at the Open University and a senior fellow of the Higher Education Academy. Her work focuses on developing new studies for the RUMPUS research centre. Her expertise lies at intersections between Science Education, Technology Enhanced Learning and Teachers’ Professional Development. Her work centres on co-creating scientifically new frameworks, methods and tools for constructing and extending socially knowledge-in-context. Her studies draw on sociocultural theory, critical pedagogy and mixed methods to explore how to prepare the next generation for Responsible Research and Innovation. “RRI” aims to align scientific development with societal needs through the interaction of five sectors: 1. educational communities, 2. scientific institutions, 3. business and industry, 4. civil society organisations and 5. policy makers.

John Oates is Professor of Developmental Psychology in the Faculty of Wellbeing, Education and Language Studies. His primary research areas are perinatal mental health and interventions for children with disabilities, special needs and disadvantage. He is a member of the British Psychological Society Ethics Committee, lead for the Society’s Code of Human Research Ethics and the Media Ethics Advisory Group. He established and chaired for seven years the Open University Human Research Ethics Committee. He is an ethics reviewer for the European Research Council and member of the European Commission Community of Experts. John led the project to develop the United Kingdom Research Integrity Office’s Research Ethics and Review framework.

Rosina aims to contribute to systemic transformations in parallel with changes in the R&I system by making them more open, inclusive and transdisciplinary with the aim to achieve high impact solutions for complex societal challenges. She offers consultancy and facilitation of multi-stakeholder innovation ecosystems where different actors are invited to participate in strategic reflections and the co-design and co-implementation of action plans to promote alignment and improvement of current solutions and to co-design new ones, including policies, services and R&I solutions, among others. Rosina offers training in different undergraduate and post graduate degrees of the University of Barcelona (UB) and the Open University of Catalonia (UOC) and also in other universities, research organisations and innovation agencies and has already trained more than 5,000 researchers and innovators. Rosina has previously worked at the Barcelona Science Park and the science museums of Barcelona and London and has participated as PI in 10 EC funded projects related with RRI and education during the last 15 years (RRI Tools, Fit4Food2030, EnRRICH, InSPIRES, etc.).

Laia is the CONNECT Project Manager at the Living Lab for Heath at the IrsiCaixa AIDS Research Institute. She is coordinating the implementation of CONNECT in the region of Catalonia (Spain) in collaboration with Escoles Sentinella’s project. A passionate of science education in formal and non-formal contexts, Laia holds a Master of Secondary School Professor and a Master of Science, Medical and Environmental Communication. She studied a degree in Biology and a PhD in Biotechnology and after five years in first line of biomedical research, she decided to change her perspective and work to make science and society closer. First, during 5 years, she worked at the communication office from the Institute of Molecular Biology of Barcelona and, after, she joined the Living Lab for Health since now.

Aina graduated in Biomedical Sciences from the Autonomous University of Barcelona in 2017. Later, she completed a master’s degree in Clinical Research focused in International Health, at the Institute of Global Health (ISGlobal) and the University of Barcelona. She started working at the Living lab when she was coursing her master’s thesis conducting Community Based Participatory Research and joined the InSPIRES European project and educational projects. In 2019 she completed her master’s degree in Secondary education at UPF-UOC. She supports the iterative processes of collaborative strategic reflection and processes of cocreation with multistakeholder ecosystems to accelerate systemic transformative change developed by the Living Lab.

Mihai BÎZOI is Associate Professor, Ph.D. in the Department of Automatic Control, Informatics and Electrical Engineering. He was involved in different ICT projects (research and educational) at national and international level and also in teacher training programmes (related to the use of ICT in education and sustainable development). His current research interests include communication-driven decision support systems, group decision support systems, web collaborative technologies, e-learning platforms, virtual instrumentation, multi-linguistic cooperative environments. He actively participated in European projects that claimed the use of modern technologies in education, being a key person on designing the specification and suitable software applications, but also on sustaining the teachers’ continuous professional development programmes.

Ana Maria Suduc is Associate Professor, Ph.D, in the Department of Automatic Control, Informatics and Electrical Engineering and she was involved as member or local coordinator, in national and European projects (FP7, LLP and Erasmus+), most of these projects being about integrating the use of modern technologies in education, to foster the development of social, civic, intercultural competences. Laura Monica GORGHIU is Associate Professor, Ph.D., in the Sciences and Advanced Technologies Department, Faculty of Sciences and Arts. She has experience in academic management and projects management, being involved as coordinator or team member in 30 research contracts and international/national projects in the areas of ICT in education and Science education. She has great experience in creating and organizing specific frames for developing on-line courses dedicated to in-service teachers and specific training modules for introducing ICT in education, pedagogical use of ICT, e-learning / cooperative platforms, Teacher Training Course for in-service teachers in foreign languages, RRI issues, making analysis and linking with the primary and secondary educational environment.

Responsible for school partnerships in Romania
Gabriel GORGHIU is Professor, Ph.D., at Teacher Training Department and has great experience in working on the European programmes as he was involved since 1995 in different projects on Tempus, World Bank, Socrates, LLP and FP7 frameworks. His area of interest is oriented on educational technologies – e-learning, interaction and virtual communication, web-based learning platforms, using ICT for educational purposes, teacher training, RRI issues. He acted as local coordinator of the FP7 projects: “PROFILES – Professional Reflection Oriented Focus on Inquiry-based Learning and Education through Science” and “IRRESISTIBLE – Including Responsible Research and Innovation in Cutting Edge Science and Inquiry-based Science Education to Improve Teacher’s Ability of Bridging Learning.

WP1 Leader - Project manager
Alexandros Koukovinis is currently a European projects consultant at Loba, with experience in EU Projects design, implementation, coordination, dissemination and evaluation. He is an education specialist, with a capacity strongly supported by his academic background (Bachelor’s in Primary Education Teaching, and a Master’s in the use of Information and Communications Technologies in Education obtained at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Greece). Also, he is currently (since 2020) an MBA candidate at the Open University of Patra in Greece. He started working in 2012 at promotion and public relations companies in Greece, then in 2013 he worked at Media Markt headquarters in the communications and customers’ service and communication department while at the same time he was a researcher in European projects for the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens.
From 2016 to 2018 he worked at Science View in Greece, and then from 2019 to 2021, he worked at the International Cooperation Unit of INOVA+ in Portugal, in both companies he managed and implemented European projects in the fields of Education, Entrepreneurship, Science Communication and Responsible Research and Innovation and he has been very active in international level organizing various workshops, conferences and trainings. Throughout the involvement in projects, he has worked very closely with schools, teachers and students, and led firmly the dissemination in more than 13 projects with a great focus on maximising the outreach and impact and making results impactful.

She has 13 years of experience in management of European funded projects in different Programmes such as H2020, FP7, Erasmus+, etc. in fields related to sustainable innovation, communication, transport, ICT, bioeconomy, among other. Candela is also specialised in communication and promotional activities, gained through years of experience under the frame of European projects and other activities, developing and implementing communication plans, organising events or transfer of knowledge initiatives, promoting innovation, conducting assessment for market uptake and potential commercialisation. Candela holds two degrees on Marketing and Sociology, the former obtained at Rochester Institute of Technology, United States of America, and the latter at Universidad de Salamanca, Spain. She is fluent in English, Portuguese and Spanish.

Catarina Pereira is a project manager at LOBA.cx and currently holds the position of Communication & Dissemination Team Leader at the EU-Projects departament. Catarina manages the communication and dissemination activities of different European funded projects in fields related to sustainable innovation, ICT, bioeconomy, alternative financing, security, bigdata, among others. She also takes part in proposal writing. Catarina holds a degree on Languages Applied to Business Relations and a master on Communication Sciences, both obtained at Faculdade de Letras da Universidade do Porto, Portugal. He has serviced education as a teacher as well as a headmaster of High schools for 27 years. Katerina Lampridou comes from Heraklion Crete, where she lives. She’s been working for the last ten years at the Regional Directorate of Primary and Secondary Education of Crete. She’s been an administrative officer for the last three years and one of her duties is to monitor the European programmes that the Regional Directorate manages. She has participated in various Erasmus European programmes, providing administrative support.

Emmanouil Stavrakakis comes from Heraklion Crete, where he lives. He’s been working for the last seven years at the Regional Directorate of Primary and Secondary Education of Crete in which he has been the head of the Financial Department since 2016. He has a Master in Education degree while his main studies are in the area of Arts and specifically in “Restoration of work of Arts” – Technological University of Athens. He has worked as a high school teacher for 10 years and he has participated in various Erasmus European programmes, providing administrative support.
